As you may have heard, Australia is soon to have its own Local Harvest website, to help Australians find local sources of food and grow their own. Based on the US website of the same name, this resource has been initiated by the Ethical Consumer Group, who have already contributed much great work towards raising awareness around ethical and sustainable food in this country. To date their efforts have involved offering tools for demystifying ethical purchasing decisions through their Guide to Ethical Supermarket Shopping, supermarket tours and other initiatives.
Now, for the betterment the local food security, they are extending their skills to create a directory of sustainable food in Australia as a one stop shop for anyone trying to find food co-ops and box systems etc in their suburb and surrounding areas. After a successful fundraising drive through Pozible, a “crowdfunding” platform for creative ideas and initiatives, Local Harvest will be lanching in February 2012 at the Sustainable Living Festival.
The project has already attracted media attention and was covered in The Age’s Epicure recently Mitchell, P 2012 'The plot thickens' in Epicure, The Age 17 January 2012
The Farm Gateway will be contributing its resources to help support Local Harvest in the area of Community Supported Agriculture initiatives in Victoria. |

Transition Farm, a small family farm located on the Mornington Peninsula is excited to be starting their first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program in January 2012.
The farm is focused on growing wholesome, natural and chemical free vegetables, fruit and herbs using sustainable farming practices. Households who sign up to the upcoming program, also called the Summer Share, will receive a box full of fresh, organic, local produce each week. All produce is grown on the farm from seed, whose progress along with other happenings on the farm and the development of the CSA can be subscribed to via their website or by going to the page ‘Seasonal Notes’.
Commencing on Friday 20th January 2012, applications are now being taken for this first shortened introductory program, which will run through until the end of February. After this initial six week program, the next CSA program will start up again in full swing on 1st Sept 2012. This program will run through Spring, Summer and Autumn to end on 31st May 2013.
As they say on their website - “If you want to know where your food is grown, who is growing your food and how they are doing it – then we hope you will be interested to look through our website and join us for our summer program which starts in January 2012.” All details on the farm, what to expect in the weekly box, costs and how to sign up can be found at www.transitionfarm.com or questions can be emailed to

Congratulations to Damper Creek Cooperative (sustainable local organic produce) of Ashwood, which has won the category for Community Action in the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Sustainable Cities Awards. The Cooperative runs a produce swap, organic vegie box scheme and coordinates dry goods distribution with members. This is all part of their aims to minimise their greenhouse gas contributions, support local food producers, be socially responsible, promote local resilience and a sense of community.
Winning the award is notable as Damper Creek Cooperative was initiated by members of the community whilst all other 17 finalists in the different categories for the awards were either supported or initiated by municipal councils.
Indeed it has been an exciting weekend for the Cooperative who, two days after receiving the award last Friday, were also covered in a story included in The Sunday Age (also mentioning The Farm Gateway), available to read via the link below.
They are also mentioned briefly here:
