Village Futures Food started their business in April 2010, connecting growers and eaters in the Shire of Nilumbik, on Melbourne's north east fringe. They provide a vegie box delivery service to 'local hubs' in locations such as Hurstbridge where members are able to collect their vegies and swap them with other members.
Each box is enough to feed a family of four for a week and costs $55 each, plus $8 for distribution and marketing. All produce is grown within a 30 km radius of Eltham and is from growers such as Nature's Grove who are chemical and GM free.
As a community food system, it may be defined as a vegie box scheme co-ordinated by a retail distributor.
Village Futures Food is currently developing relationships with other growers and hopes to expand their membership in November 2010.
