CSA benefits share-holders by giving them a connection with their farmer as well the reassurance of knowing where their food comes from and where their money is going. Sometimes share-holders can also choose to participate in educational or social activities, which helps to strengthen communities while enlightening them as to what is involved in growing food.

CSA particularly supports small scale farmers who practice sustainable agriculture.  According to a study in the US "virtually all CSA farms report using environmentally regenerative farming practices, with over 94% implementing organic or biodynamic farming systems" (Lass 1999).

Thus CSA is beneficial on many different levels including:

  • Health & nutrition
    • Through the availability of fresh organic and/or biodynamic produce
  • Community development
    • By bringing people together
    • By supporting small farmers and local economies
  • Environment
    • By supporting sustainable agriculture
    • By reducing food miles
    • By increasing people's understanding of nature and the natural processes involved in growing and raising food.
  • Education
    • Raises ones awareness about the ethics, issues and impacts of the food system
